COVER For many metallic materials, pulsed laser treatment canbe used as an effective surface modification method that is able to induce drastic microstructural changes leading to improved properties. After employing the pulsed laser surface treatment for a duplex-phase Zr alloy, a layer of unreported bimodal plate structures (BPS) is identified. The BPS is featured by coarse (submicron) plates as multiple cores that are surrounded by dense fine (nanoscale) plates, as shown in the cover. Such a peculiar structure allows us to expect optimized mechanical and/or other properties. Investigation of the formation mechanism of the BPS in the Zr alloy could also shed some light on exploring and utilizing such an interesting structure in other materials.
